Long Drive Games
Short-trip games run out of road. On a six-hour drive the problem isn't finding one game — it's pacing several so the car doesn't burn through everything before lunch. Here's an hour-by-hour plan, built around The Stereotype: State Line, our free pass-and-play road trip board game.

Hour 1 — warm-up
License Plate States or the Alphabet GameEveryone's still fresh and looking out the window anyway. Low effort, no rules to explain, and it gets the car talking.
Hour 2 — conversation
Would You Rather, Two Truths and a Lie, Hot SeatThe scenery gets boring before the people do. Question games carry an easy hour without anyone needing to hold anything.
Hour 3 — the slump
State Line, a full pass-and-play board gameThis is where most car games die. A game with a board, dice, a score and an actual winner gives the car something to argue about for 40 minutes straight.
Hour 4 — low energy
The Story Game or Fortunately / UnfortunatelyNo scorekeeping, no memory load. Someone can drift off mid-round and nothing breaks.
Hour 5 — audio break
A podcast episode or an album everyone picks one track fromForce a break from games. Coming back to a game after silence works better than grinding through.
Hour 6 — the finish
Guess the Arrival Time, then a State Line rematchEveryone bets on the arrival minute; closest wins. Then settle the earlier score before you pull in.
Rules that keep a long drive sane
- Cap every game at 30–40 minutes, even a good one. Stop while people still want more.
- The driver never holds a device. Give the phone to a designated passenger.
- Rotate who chooses. Resentment about the aux cord and the game choice is the same resentment.
- Keep one screen-free game in reserve for when a passenger gets carsick.
- Plan a real break every two hours. Games don't replace stretching.
Frequently asked questions
- What are the best games for a long car ride?
- Mix three types: observation games early, conversation games in the middle, and one structured game with a winner for the slump around hour three. Repeating one game for six hours is what kills the mood.
- What can we play without any equipment?
- The Alphabet Game, 20 Questions, Would You Rather, Two Truths and a Lie, Fortunately/Unfortunately and the Story Game all need nothing but voices.
- Do phone games make people carsick?
- They can. Pass-and-play games help because each person only looks down for their own short turn instead of staring the whole time. Keep the windows cracked and stop if anyone feels rough.
- Is State Line free?
- Yes, for up to 3 players with a starter deck. The Full Game unlock ($4.99) adds all four regions, 8 players and 100 cards — see pricing.
