Both of you hunt A to Z on signs at the same time, but you can't claim a letter the other already called. First to Z picks the next stop.
20 Questions
One person thinks of a person, place or thing; the other gets twenty yes-or-no questions. Perfect for two because nobody has to wait their turn.
Would You Rather
With two people the debate lasts longer than the question. Alternate who poses the dilemma every ten miles.
The Story Game
One sentence each, alternating, building one story. No going back and no killing off characters the other invented.
Fortunately / Unfortunately
'Fortunately we found a gas station.' 'Unfortunately it only sold beef jerky.' Keep going until one of you laughs first.
Guess the Exit
Before the next sign, each guess how many miles to the next town. Closest guess banks a point. Ten points wins the aux cord.

- What car games work with only two people?
- Anything turn-based rather than team-based: 20 Questions, the Alphabet Game, Fortunately/Unfortunately, and pass-and-play board games like State Line. Avoid games that need a majority vote to resolve.
- Can the driver play safely?
- Only with games that need no screen and no hands. The driver can answer questions or judge a challenge out loud, but the passenger should hold the phone and do all the tapping.
- Does State Line work with two players?
